While the body of Debendra Behera was recovered after a search operation by fire personnel, boatman Sudarshan Swain remained missing. According to sources, a manhunt is underway to find him.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his condolences for the death of one person in the boat accident and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the deceased's next of kin.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement that he has directed the Kendrapada district collector to hand over the ex-gratia money to the deceased's family by this evening.
According to sources, the mishap occurred while the ill-fated boat was on its way from Ekamania to Keradagarh in the Rajnagar area of the district. Over 30 passengers and some bikes boarded the boat. The boat lost control after a short distance and capsized.
While the minor boy and the boatman went missing, other passengers were quickly rescued. The fire department launched a massive search operation, and Debendra's body was recovered after two hours. The boatman is being sought, according to the sources.
