Cuttack: After a long absence, reports of mass sheep slaughter have surfaced from Niali in Odisha's Cuttack district. The death of 29 sheep belonging to two local residents has caused widespread panic.
According to sources, on Monday night, a farmer from Gunadola Thakura Pokhari Sahi in Kantapada block lost 9 sheep. "Around 1 a.m., we heard the dogs braking and saw a black shadow inside the enclosure. "The attack injured ten more sheep," said the farmer.
A few days ago, 20 sheep belonging to another farmer were discovered dead in the same village.
Following the repeated slaughter of sheep, concerned farmers have petitioned the forest department to take action against the marauding animals. They have also sought restitution for their losses.
Niali may recall that she witnessed similar mayhem in 2017. The killing of sheep by unknown animal/s was first reported in June of that year. Over 250 sheep were slaughtered in the region in two months. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) expert team then put an end to all speculation about the Niali sheep-killer by claiming that all evidence pointed to a wolf.
Mystery animals caused havoc in the neighboring Balipatna block in April 2021, killing a few sheep.
