An elephant trampled to death an eight-year-old girl in the early hours of the morning at Saralia Chitrasul village in the Soro block of Balasore district, according to sources.

When a herd of about eight elephants entered the courtyard, the girl began to scream. When the family members attempted to drive the pachyderms away, one of the elephants broke into their home and trampled the young girl.

The girl was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but she was declared dead by doctors.
