Puri: The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, will be closed to the public for four hours on Wednesday for the sibling deities' 'Banaka Lagi' or 'Srimukha Sringara' ritual.
This special ritual is performed on Pratipada Tithi in the month of Chaitra, according to temple authorities. This niti will be performed by Dutta Mohapatra servants between 5 and 9 p.m., during which public darshan will be suspended.
Servants will perform 'Srimukha Sringara' of deities during the Banakalagi ritual. As part of this secret ritual, the servitors will smear a fresh coat of paint on the deities' idols to restore their original appearance.
Following an age-old tradition, servitors prepare 'Banaka' with natural colors such as hingula, haritala, kasturi, keshar, and kaintha glue.
The ritual is carried out seven to eight times per year.
