Bhubaneswar: Property worth more than Rs 3 crore that two people in the Ganjam area had illegally purchased through the drug trade has been seized by the STF of the Odisha Crime Branch.

During a raid on April 29, the STF discovered 106 kg of marijuana, 517 grammes of opium, and other incriminating evidence in the possession of two men named Banamali Pradhan and Arun Kumar Pradhan of Raghunathsahi under the Buguda police station.

The STF seized Banamali and Arun's properties when it was established that they had purchased them with money obtained illegally through the drug trade. Chapter VA of the NDPS Act (Section A-Z) has a clause that allows for the seizure and forfeiture of property that has been illegally acquired from the drug trade within six years, according to an STF announcement.

The seized assets include two automobiles, five commercial structures in Buguda, eight lands, deposits in 19 accounts with various institutions, and jewellery made of gold and silver that weighs 595 grammes and 190 grammes, respectively. PWD R&B, Buguda has assessed the structures.

The Competent Authority, Kolkata, a quasi-judicial body established by the NDPS Act, has been provided a detailed proposal for confirmation of the seizure of the accused's properties obtained from the ganja and opium operation along with a request for forfeiture.

It should be emphasised that Excise officials have previously booked the accused individuals in incidents identical to this one.
