Cuttack: Tuesday in Odisha saw the death of another pachyderm from a gunshot wound, two days after the skeletons of two elephants were discovered.

The injured elephant was reportedly seen travelling a few days ago in the Jaipur sector of the Narasinghpur forest range, which is part of the Athgarh forest division in the Cuttack district. They contacted the Forest officials when the elephant fell into a creek in the forest and became immobile.

The elephant was tranquillized by a crew from the Athgarh forest division, which arrived at the scene. They examined the elephant and discovered a gunshot wound close to its ear. Although the elephant was receiving treatment from veterinarians with the assistance of Forest officials, it passed away on Tuesday.

The physicians believed that the elephant may have died as a result of the infection brought on by the gunshot spreading to other regions of its body.

On June 14, a tusker with gunshot wounds was discovered next to a watercourse in the Narasinghapur forest area under the Athgarh forest division.

It should be remembered that on Sunday, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch located the skeletons of two elephants in a Sambalpur district forest range. While one skeleton was discovered in a reserve forest close to the settlement of Tabalei-Deogaon in the Dhama forest range, the second skeleton was discovered in Kalogaon in the same range.

The elephants were allegedly burned after being slaughtered by poachers, according to Dhama range deputy ranger Purna Chandra Mahant. Burnt wood and elephant bones were discovered in both locations, but the elephant in the second case had been buried after being burned since its skeleton was uncovered after digging up the earth nearby, the expert continued.
