After ECMO treatment in Chennai, an Odisha man survives post-COVID complications
Bhubaneswar: Debakant Pradhan recently returned to Odisha alive and hearty after having ECMO therapy for almost four months at MGM Hospital in Chennai.
He was taken to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on June 10 after testing positive for COVID. He is a resident of Hindol in the Dhenkanal district. He was moved to the intensive care unit and placed on ventilator support. He was infected with a virus and had pneumonia. The illness has also gravely harmed his lungs.
On the recommendation of the physicians, the 41-year-old was evacuated from Bhubaneswar to MGM Hospital in Chennai on June 18 for ECMO therapy. The Commissionerate Police had built a green corridor to let the critically ill patient get from the private hospital to Biju Patnaik International Airport as quickly as possible.
After more than four months of therapy, he was able to recover. His therapy cost the family more than Rs 1.5 crore. They had raised Rs.8,16,497 through crowd-funding in addition to requesting support from the government and friends.
"I am grateful to God, my family, and the people of Odisha." Their blessings were important in my surviving the sickness as well as the post-COVID problems. For me, this is a type of rebirth," Debakant told the press.
Abhishek Mohapatra, a resident of Bhadrak in Odisha, died in September after receiving three months of ECMO therapy in Kolkata.
Sangram Keshari Jena, the former president of the Odisha Youth Congress, died in a Hyderabad hospital in August from post-COVID problems. After his condition deteriorated, he was evacuated to the private hospital centre on May 23 for ECMO therapy.
They were among the first patients to be flown out of the state for ECMO therapy. SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and AIIMS-Bhubaneswar currently provide the service.
