Cyclone ‘Sitrang’ likely to skirt Odisha coast on Oct 25

Bhubaneswar: According to the regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone "Sitrang" may skim the coast of Odisha before heading towards the beaches of West Bengal and Bangladesh around October 24.
The low pressure system that emerged today is extremely likely to proceed west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent east-central areas around October 22, and develop into a deep depression on October 22. It is then highly likely to recurve northward by October 24 and become a cyclonic storm over the western and adjacent eastern Bay of Bengal. Following that, it is predicted to move progressively north-northeastward and approach the West Bengal and Bangladesh shores on October 25 while skirting the Odisha coast, according to a tweet from the MeT office.
However, the IMD has not yet issued a forecast for its intensity or wind speed.
The potential cyclone may potentially pass near the coast of Odisha before reaching landfall at Haldibari in West Bengal, according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), while the American Global Forecast System predicted landfall at Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Noteworthy is that on October 23, the MeT office issued a heavy rainfall warning for the districts of Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur. Further escalation in severity is likely, it was added.
In the meantime, the government of Odisha has issued an alert for seven coastal districts that are particularly vulnerable to a potential cyclone. If a cyclone strikes the Odisha coast, the district collectors of Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Balasore have been urged to be ready for any unfavourable circumstances.
