Bride’s mother killed in knife attack during marriage procession brawl

Bargarh: In a village in Bargarh district late Thursday night, the mother of a bride was slashed to death as the groom arrived in procession for the wedding.

According to sources, Rashmi Rajhans, the daughter of Dadumani Rajhans, and Kishori Rajhans were planning to marry in their Salepali hamlet, which is under Melchhamunda police jurisdiction. The baraat arrived in the village at midnight and proceeded to the bride's house in a procession accompanied by loud music and crackers.

Some of the groom's family and friends who had arrived with the baraati were dancing joyfully to the music. In their zeal for the dance, they accidentally pushed some locals who were observing the parade. However, the villagers objected, and a debate arose.

As the disagreement turned into a passionate exchange of words, the bride's mother, Kishori, hurried to the scene and attempted to calm both the villagers and the baraati members. The people were enraged at Kishori's meddling and attacked her. Sumant and Subodh, two peasants from the area, arrived with sharp weapons and hacked Kishori to death.
