There have been nine students and alumni who have participated in the Olympics in the past.
Achyuta Samanta, the founder of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), has announced that fifteen students from KIIT have qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024. Among them, one participated in hockey, and the others were athletes, including a javelin thrower. Amit Rohidas was a part of the Indian men's hockey team.
With these 12 sportspersons, the total number of Olympians from the Bhubaneswar-based institute now stands at 24, along with nine others, who are students and alumni, having participated in past Olympics.
As a token of support and encouragement, the institute has provided each participating student with Rs 7 lakh. Additionally, students who secure a medal at the Olympics will be given an apartment.
In addition to promoting sports, KIIT has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Volunteers, offering opportunities for students to volunteer and engage with various UN agencies, such as Unesco and Unicef, for professional experience in international development.
Furthermore, Grammy award winner composer Ricky Kej has created a special version of the Indian National Anthem, featuring performances by music legends as well as 14,000 children from KISS. This version will be released on August 14, on the eve of Independence Day.
