The police have arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who admitted to the crime. He has been placed in police custody until August 23. In addition, several high-ranking officials of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been suspended due to negligence in the matter.

- August 8, morning: He visited RG Kar Hospital to help admit a patient and later returned at night to assist with an X-ray.
- August 9, early hours: Sanjay returned to help another patient with surgery. After that, he allegedly raped and murdered the junior doctor in a seminar hall. He was captured leaving the hospital premises on CCTV at 4:37 am.
- Later that morning: Sanjay was detained by the police and, after interrogation, was arrested and charged with rape and murder.
