Bhubaneswar: Firefighters struggled to control the blaze in the market complex on Grand Road in Odisha's Puri town on Thursday, 12 hours after the incident.
This morning, thick smoke could be seen billowing from the building as the fire spread to the second floor. According to sources, the narrow passage and closed shops in the market complex have made the task of Fire Service personnel even more difficult.
Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh stated that they were hopeful of bringing the situation under control within the next two to three hours after taking stock of the situation. He also urged people not to be alarmed.
Around 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, a fire broke out in a garment shop on the first floor of the market complex. The flames quickly spread to other parts of the building. Three people were injured in the incident and were taken to the hospital.
To avoid any untoward incidents, the electricity supply in the area has been turned off.
"Around 90 firefighters and 12 fire-fighting vehicles have been deployed. In the absence of an exit and approach road, it is a difficult task. "Efforts are being made to extinguish the flame as soon as possible," said Fire Services DG Santosh Upadhyay.
The fire is thought to have been started by an electrical short circuit.
