Sambalpur: On Saturday, the district administration imposed a curfew in many parts of Odisha's arson-hit Sambalpur, while the ban on internet services was extended for two more days.

As tensions rose in the city, which had been rocked by new violence, an indefinite curfew was declared in many areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations as a precautionary measure. According to sources, the curfew restrictions will remain in effect until further orders are issued, and the situation will be reviewed on a regular basis.

Curfews were imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur's Town Police Station, Dhanupali Police Station, Khetrajpur PS, Ainthapali PS, Bareipali PS, and Sadar Police Station to ensure peace and tranquillity.

It should be noted that widespread violence and a clash between two groups occurred during a rally ahead of Hanuman Janmotsav in western Odisha. At least ten police officers were injured, several vehicles were allegedly damaged, and some stores were set on fire.

Given the current situation, the authorities have extended the city's internet service ban for another 48 hours. The ban on using and accessing internet and data services, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media, has been extended for another 48 hours, until 10 a.m. on April 17.

Nobody will be permitted to leave their homes during the curfew. People are permitted to do their essential work during two time periods: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. All commercial and educational establishments will remain closed. During the relaxation period, only people will be allowed to buy groceries and other necessities, she said.

People should only use their vacation time to buy necessities. A helpline number has also been established to assist people in medical emergencies.

The collector also urged the public not to believe rumors and to contact their local police station immediately if they come across any.

Strict action will be taken against mischief-makers who spread rumors, she said, adding that approximately 95% of rumours are false and that people must remain cautious and vigilant.
