Bhubaneswar: Even as a curfew was imposed in Odisha's Sambalpur following new violence, Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Bansal said on Saturday that those involved in arson would face consequences.

Bansal stated that the situation in the western Odisha city is now under control, adding that an additional police force had been deployed in the city in light of recent violence and tension in several parts of Sambalpur.

Senior police officers have also been dispatched to constantly monitor the situation and take the necessary steps to restore normalcy in the city, he said. Police officers are keeping a close eye on the situation in order to restore normalcy and prevent further trouble.

The DGP stated that a decision on action against troublemakers will be made after a thorough analysis of the situation. While those responsible for arson will face consequences, those who incite violence will also face consequences.

Following new violence on Friday, the Sambalpur district administration imposed a curfew in many parts of the city, while the internet ban was extended for two more days on Saturday.

As tensions rose in the city, which had been rocked by new violence, an indefinite curfew was declared in many areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations as a precautionary measure.

Curfews were imposed in areas under the jurisdiction of Sambalpur's Town Police Station, Dhanupali Police Station, Khetrajpur PS, Ainthapali PS, Bareipali PS, and Sadar Police Station to ensure peace and tranquillity.

It should be noted that widespread violence and a clash between two groups occurred during a rally in western Odisha on Wednesday ahead of Hanuman Janmotsav. At least ten police officers were injured, several vehicles were allegedly damaged, and some stores were set on fire.

Given the current situation, the authorities have extended the city's internet service ban for another 48 hours. The ban on using and accessing internet and data services, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media, has been extended for another 48 hours, until 10 a.m. on April 17.
