Baripada: Late Friday night, a wild elephant assaulted and killed an elderly woman in Khadikoshal hamlet, Betnoti forest range, Mayurbhanj.
Sumitra Dehury, wife of Sarbeswar Dehury of Khadikoshal village, has been recognised as the woman. The elephant broke into the woman's house hunting for food while she was sleeping.
Elephants have been killing people and destroying property in the village for years, according to officials. Forest department officials have launched an investigation into the issue.
