The accused, Manoj Moharana alias Mangu of Bhanpur in the Sadar police limits of Cuttack, was shot in the left thigh and is being treated at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here.
According to sources, he was a major member of the Tapu gang and the primary accused in a Kandarpur dacoity in which a businessman's assets were looted. "He opened fire on the IIC of Kandarpur and his team around 10.30 p.m. when they attempted to intercept him near Uttamapur."
"When the cops retaliated, he was hit in the thigh," Additional DCP Anil Mishra told the media.
Manoj is also implicated in several other criminal cases, including eight dacoity charges and illegal arms sale, and further investigation is ongoing, he said.
