Sambalpur: To avoid any untoward incidents in volatile Sambalpur, the district administration on Thursday extended the suspension of internet services until 10 a.m. on April 22.

However, broadband and leased lines will be made available in the western Odisha district during the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Internet services have been suspended since April 13, a day after a clash between two groups in the district headquarters town ahead of Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, to prevent the spread of inflammatory messages and the misuse of social media. The previous day, it was partially resumed in some blocks.

According to sources, normalcy has returned to the district headquarters town, with the curfew being relaxed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. B Gangadhar, the SP of Sambalpur, had previously stated that the curfew would be relaxed further in the next one or two days.

The roadblocks that restrict vehicular movement are also being removed.

The streets were deserted on Wednesday, even during the curfew relaxation period in the first half of the day, due to the 12-hour bandh called by the VHP in response to the recent violence in the town between April 12 and 14. A total of 45 police platoons have been deployed throughout Sambalpur.
