On Tuesday, anti-corruption Vigilance sleuths apprehended a Block Education Officer (BEO) in Odisha's Dhenkanal district for allegedly taking a Rs 10,000 bribe from a teacher in order to release his pending arrear salary.

Dhenkanal: On Tuesday, anti-corruption Vigilance sleuths apprehended a Block Education Officer (BEO) in Odisha's Dhenkanal district for allegedly taking a Rs 10,000 bribe from a teacher in order to release his pending arrear salary.

In response to a complaint, Vigilance officials set a trap and apprehended Santanu Kumar Mallik, BEO of Hindol in the district, while demanding and accepting Rs 10,000 as a bribe to release a teacher's arrear salary that was pending on official grounds.

The entire bribe money of Rs 10,000 has been recovered and seized from the accused's sole possession, according to a press release from Vigilance.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three Mallik locations from the Disproportionate Assets angle.

So far, cash totaling Rs 11.92 lakh has been seized from the accused BEO's two locations. While Rs 11,10,370 was discovered during a search of his Bhadrak home, Rs 82,000 was discovered at Mallik's Hindol home, according to the report, which added that searches are still ongoing.

A case has been filed under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act of 2018, and an investigation is underway. More information is awaited.
