Sonepur: On Tuesday, a wild elephant died of electrocution near Mahada village in the Binika area of Sonepur district, adding to the state's ongoing jumbo casualties.

According to reports, the elephant died after coming into contact with a live electric wire fence installed in the area to protect wild boar poachers.

Officials from the forest department rushed to the scene after receiving information and launched an investigation into the incident.

According to sources, the animal died as a result of electrocution, and forest officials seized the electric wire trap that was laid across 1 km in the area.

Concerned about the incident, local residents demanded that the forest department take concrete steps to limit the activities of poachers in the area.

It should be noted that 784 elephants have died in the state in the last ten years. Poachers killed 11 wild elephants between 2022 and 2023, according to official sources.

Odisha has 1,976 elephants, according to the most recent census in 2017.
