Bhawanipatna: Following Jeypore and Rourkela, preparations are being made to begin flight operations at Utkela airport in Odisha's Kalahandi district.

The preparations at Utkela airport follow the start of unscheduled flight service at Rangeilunda airstrip on the outskirts of Berhampur city on March 5, coinciding with former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik's 107th birthday.

Soruces stated that the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was asked a few months ago to issue a license for flight operations to and from the 2-B Category Utkela Airport.

As a result, a five-member DGCA team visited the airport in Bhawanipatna on Friday, they said.

The DGCA team inspected the Utkela airport and held a meeting to discuss the proposed flight operations between Bhawanipatna and Bhubaneswar.

The DGCA had previously written letters to the Odisha Commerce and Transport Department, the district Collector of Kalahandi, the Works Department, and the police, requesting that they provide the necessary manpower for the airport.

Flight operations from the Utkela airport could start as early as next month if all formalities are completed and the necessary permission is obtained from the DGCA by the end of the current month.

It should be noted that Utkela is one of the Odisha airstrips included in the UDAN scheme in 2016.
