Nuapada: The leopard, which has been on the prowl in Odisha's Nuapada district, is said to have killed a cow in the early hours of Saturday at Taria Mahulabhatta village, which is part of the Nuapada forest range.

According to locals, the big cat entered the village late at night and dragged a cow from one Kuman Naik's cattle shed. Villagers later discovered its mauled carcass in the surrounding area.

Following notification, a team of forest officials visited the village and urged the residents to remain vigilant. "CCTV cameras have been installed at various locations to track its movement, and efforts are underway to capture it," said a forest officer.

This came three days after a calf was discovered dead in Jalamadhei village within the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha's Nuapada district, and three days after a woman, Sanamati Barik (65), was mauled to death by the big cat while going to collect firewood near her home on March 19.

The third attack in a week has caused panic among the villagers, who are sleeping through the night.  Two buffaloes and a calf were killed, while one bullock and a calf were attacked by leopards, which the villagers claim have been straying into the villages and dragging livestock away from their homes for the last three weeks.

Since March 6, at least four such incidents have been reported, in which locals discovered half-eaten carcasses of their cattle and even spotted the animal.

According to reports, a female leopard has taken refuge in a cave near the village with her two cubs and is hunting for prey to feed herself and her cubs.
