Man killed, wife critical in elephant attack in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: In the early hours of Monday in Odisha's Dhenkanal district, a tusker attacked a man and his wife in a forest close to their hamlet, leaving the man dead and the woman critically injured, according to sources.

The pair said that the incident occurred when they went into the forest to answer nature's call close to Tarapur hamlet, which is situated in the Pangatira forest sector inside the Mahabirod range of the Dhenkanal forest division.

Ramesh Behera of Chandapur village was identified as the deceased, and his wife Tara Behera suffered grave injuries in the jumbo assault.

Both victims of the pachyderm attack were transferred to a hospital in Mahabirod before being rushed to the community health centre in Parajang. As their condition worsened, they were eventually transferred to the sub-divisional hospital at Kamakhyanagar.

Ramesh was pronounced dead, but the woman is being treated by hospital medical specialist Dr. Sudhansu Pradhan. He said that the woman would be treated in Cuttack.
