Berhampur: The young man died on Sunday after suffering 85 percent burns after setting himself on fire in front of the Ganjam SP office in Chhatrapur.

Badal Sahu, a resident of Borigam village in Ganjam district's Humma panchayat, died of burn injuries while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

He arrived at the office with a petrol-filled container on Saturday afternoon and poured it on himself before striking a match stick. To put out the fire, officers on the scene wrapped him in a bedsheet. He was then brought to the Chhatrapur sub-divisional hospital before being transferred to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in this city. Badal was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after his condition grew critical, with 85 percent burns.

His family had been ostracised in the community over a dispute, according to sources, and he had approached police three days ago but was supposedly humiliated. This may have compelled him to take drastic measures.
