Bhubaneswar: Prasanta Jagadev, a suspended BJD lawmaker from Chilika who had been granted bail by the Supreme Court the day before, was freed from the Banapur sub-jail in the Khurda district of Odisha on Tuesday.

The MLA has been ordered by the supreme court not to go to his Assembly district for a year. However, he is permitted to do so with the district collector's prior approval. Additionally, he is not permitted to host any political gatherings that include more than five people at once.

The lawmaker was detained on March 22 after it was claimed that he drove his SUV into a gathering of people waiting outside the Banapur block office on March 12 to be elected to the position of Panchayat Samiti Chairperson. 22 people in total, including police officers, were hurt during the event. After being beaten and having his car ransacked by the enraged mob, Jagadev also suffered injuries.

Pinaki Misra, a BJD MP and seasoned attorney, represented him in front of the supreme court despite the Odisha police's adamant opposition to his bail request.
