Injured elephant remains in pond in Sambalpur; veterinarians provide IV fluids

Sambalpur: Veterinary specialists from OUAT in Bhubaneswar treated an injured elephant in a pond in the Badasahi forest portion of Sambalpur district on Sunday.
Two elephants were injured in a tussle in the forest under the Sambalpur Forest Division a few days ago, according to sources. While one elephant entered the pond, Forest officers noticed another hobbling in the Padiabahal forest section.
On June 16, Forest officials were alerted to the injured elephants and proceeded to the scene. "The Forest officials discovered that the tusker had a high temperature, which they believe was caused by the injuries. Vishwanath Neelannavar, Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial), Sambalpur, was quoted by TNIE as saying, "It may have gone into the river to neutralise the body warmth."
After tranquillizing the elephant in the pond, veterinary doctors lead by Prof Indramani Nath, Head of Department, Surgery and Radiology, OUAT, Bhubaneswar, attended to it. However, antibiotics and painkillers had no effect on its physique, he continued.
On Sunday, the medics treated the elephant without the use of tranquillizers. "The injuries are nothing to be concerned about. However, one leg is thought to have been sprained. We are, however, providing intravenous hydration to him and monitoring his status. "It's preferable if it stays in the water," Prof Nath remarked.
According to the DFO, at least 12 forest rangers are on the scene, monitoring the elephants' movements.
