Bhubaneswar: A day after a Tehsildar was attacked while attempting to prevent illegal soil extraction in Odisha's Dhenkanal district, police arrested eight people in connection with the incident on Saturday.

According to police, eight people were arrested in connection with the assault on Parjang Tehsildar Subhra Patel on Friday. Some miscreants allegedly attacked the Tehsildar and attempted to run him over with an excavator while illegally extracting soil.

The incident occurred while some people were illegally extracting soil from government land in Patharkhamba. According to sources, when the Tehsildar raised an objection, more than ten people attacked him.

When Revenue Inspector Alok Lenka attempted to rescue the injured Tehsildar, the miscreants attacked him as well.

Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police (SP) Gyan Ranjan Mahapatra stated that eight people have been arrested so far, and that efforts are being made to determine the involvement of others in the attack.

The police claimed that some people were illegally extracting soil from government land in order to sell it to a private contractor working on the construction of a canal in the area.

The miscreants were also involved in the removal of trees from government property. They were also attempting to seize government property, he claimed.
