Rayagada: A junior engineer with the Works Department in Odisha's Rayagada district was arrested on charges of marrying four women and then divorcing them.

Gopinath Kisan was named as the accused.

This incident came to light after the engineer's fourth wife, Sunita Madhia, filed a complaint against him, accusing him of multiple marriages and dowry torture.

Sunita, a resident of Chakradharnagar in Chhattisgarh, claimed in her complaint that she married Kisan in February 2022 in Jharsuguda after meeting him on a matrimonial website. He began physically and mentally torturing her for dowry five months into the marriage, she claimed.

"Kisan informed me that his first wife had died and that this was his second marriage. Later, I discovered that he had previously married twice but had never sought divorce from either of them. When I found out about his previous marriages, he began torturing me. He also tried to kill me by throwing me off the terrace. "His first wife's mother supported him in torturing me," she claimed.

Sunita went on to say that she had previously reported the incident to police, and that he had then sought a second chance from her.

She went on to say that his previous two wives were from Sundargarh and Rourkela, and that he tortured and abandoned them.

Based on her complaint, police filed a case against Kisan in Saipriya Nagar under Sections 90 (consent known to be given under fear or misconception) and 13 (cruelty which is a ground for dissolution of marriage) of the IPC and arrested him.

While the investigation is ongoing, police have informed the department's executive engineer of his arrest.
