Bhubaneswar: Deepali Das of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) took her oath as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) on Monday, two days after her stunning victory in the Jharsuguda bypoll in Odisha.
In the presence of ministers Pramila Mallik and Rita Sahu, she was sworn in by Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Assembly Rajnikant Singh in his office chamber.
Deepali, the daughter of slain minister Naba Kishore Das, whose death necessitated the Jharsuguda by-election, won by a landslide margin of 48,721 votes over her nearest BJP candidate Tankadhar Tripathy.
She received 1,07,198 votes, while the BJP's Tankadhar received 58,477 votes. Tarun Pandey, a Congress nominee, received only 4,496 votes in the May 10 byelection.
"I will work hard to realize my late father Naba Das' unfulfilled dream." "The development process in Jharsuguda begins now," Deepali said after taking the oath.
She arrived at the Assembly with her mother and brother before taking the oath. Deepali met with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and asked for his blessing.
Deepali praised Naveen as a father figure and stated that she will work tirelessly to complete all developmental projects initiated by her father, including heart and cancer hospitals and the over bridge project.
It should be noted that the Chief Minister, who is also the BJD president, campaigned in Jharsuguda on May 7 to boost the party's candidate's chances.
