BMC seals mall for dumping waste into nearby drain

Bhubaneswar: On Friday, a shopping mall near the ISKCON temple in Odisha's capital was closed for allegedly dumping waste in a nearby natural drainage channel. A fine of Rs 1 lakh has also been imposed.
According to sources, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) had warned the mall authorities thrice against littering and throwing waste into the drain, which flows across NH-16 and ends at the temple. "During the monsoon, the national highway in front of the temple becomes flooded. If waste is dumped down the drain, it will clog and cause severe waterlogging. "The mall authorities should be more responsible in the future," a BMC officer said.
The mall will be closed for a week because it allegedly handled waste in violation of its solid waste management rules.
On February 26, the civic body fined a private health facility in Saheed Nagar here Rs 1 lakh for allegedly littering hazardous bio-medical waste.
