Woman critical as unidentified miscreant slits her throat in Berhampur village

Berhampur: Panic gripped Jagdalpur hamlet, on the outskirts of Berhampur in Odisha, following a spate of attacks on women in the region by an unidentified criminal in recent days.
According to sources, one woman was attacked twice in the last five days, while at least two others were also assaulted in the village. After initiating the attack, the scoundrel departed the scene. The unknown person's motivation for such an act has yet to be determined.
While the inexplicable episodes caused anxiety among the residents of the region, the locals are dissatisfied and irritated with the police's inability to catch the offender.
According to the residents, the first incidence occurred on Wednesday when a woman named Babua Padhi was in her house when an unknown person shoved and punched her. The thief stole several home items and fled.
On Thursday, another woman, K Bharati Patra, was beaten with an iron rod in her home by the miscreant. According to them, she suffered head injuries.
On Friday, another woman, Kabita Padhi, was beaten with a brick while standing outside her residence. She was taken to the hospital and treated.
On Sunday morning, though, she was attacked again with a sharp weapon and gravely injured. The woman was rescued and taken to Berhampur City Hospital while the scoundrel escaped the scene.
Following the event on Sunday, Ramesh Sethi, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Berhampur, and other police officers visited the area and recorded people' statements.
On Saturday, when some police officers in plain clothes were deployed in the area, no incident occurred. However, the freah attack on Sunday, when no police were present, has caused terror among the people.
According to police, all essential steps are being made to locate and apprehend the criminal as soon as possible.
