Orissa High Court has requested a status report on the investigation into the murder of Mamita

Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, the Orissa High Court ordered the state government to file a progress report on the inquiry into the murder of Mamita Meher within a week.

The High Court set the next hearing date for the case on December 3 after giving the order. In the case, the Home Secretary, the DGP, the Balangir Collector, the Balangir SP, and the IIC of the Sindhekela police station have been named as opposing parties.

Mamita's father, Suchandra Meher, had already petitioned the High Court for a time-bound, impartial investigation and trial in a fast-track court.

The petitioner had expressed his discontent with the police inquiry and claimed that the delay in concluding the investigation was placing mental strain on his family members.

Although senior police authorities have denied any inadequacies, senior lawyer Pitambar Acharya told a local TV that the family raised concern about the ongoing investigation by filing a writ case. "Police have 120 days to file a charge sheet in a murder investigation," he explained.

The principal culprit in the case, Govind Sahu, confessed to strangulating 24-year-old Mamita of Jharni village in Turekela block of Balangir district to death in his car on October 8, according to the police.

Sahu allegedly acknowledged to burning and burying Mamita's body at the Sunshine English Medium School's under-construction stadium in Mahaling, Kalahandi district, where she worked as a teacher.

The body was unearthed from the stadium on October 19, along with an anklet, a chain, and a half-burned bag.
