Cyber Crime: Businessman defrauded of Rs 30 lakh

Cuttack: In a separate cyber scam, an unnamed individual defrauded a businessman out of around Rs 30 lakh by offering to build a mobile phone tower on his land in Deogarh district.
According to a complaint submitted by Sanjay Kumar Dalabehera at the state Crime Branch's cyber police station in Cuttack, on November 6, 2019, an anonymous individual phoned him on the phone and introduced himself as a senior official of Reliance Jio.
The con man informed Dalabehera that if he agreed to build a mobile phone tower in his plot, his business would pay him Rs 15 lakh and provide one of his family members a job. Dalabehera was requested to give copies of his land, Aadhaar card, PAN card, and bank account data after he consented to the idea.
Later, the so-called executive demanded Rs 10,000 from Dalabehera to turn his allotment into commercial land. Following that, he proceeded to extort money from Dalabehera under the guise of tender submission, tender verification, billing costs, pollution certificate, and so on.
Dalabehera also paid him without verifying his credentials till he paid a total of Rs 30.47 lakh. When nothing substantial appeared, Dalabehera realised he had been deceived and filed a complaint with the cyber police station.
"Dalabehera had never seen or met the caller. "However, he transferred Rs 30.47 lakh to several bank accounts on separate dates as indicated by the accused," a cyber police official informed TOI.
Meanwhile, the police have determined that the caller was from either Assam or West Bengal based on their preliminary inquiry into the bank accounts where Dalabehera had sent the money.
In July, police in Kolkata nabbed two people for defrauding a businessman of Rs 39 lakh on the same pretext of erecting a telephone tower.
