Odisha civil supply inspector given a three-year prison sentence

Berhampur: A special vigilance court in Berhampur, Odisha, found Aska Prakash Chandra Patra, a civil supply inspector in the Ganjam district, guilty of having disproportionate assets and sentenced him to three years in prison as well as a fine of Rs 20,000. He has been sentenced to another six months in prison if the fine is not paid.
On December 3, 1997, while Patra was employed as a supply inspector at Paralakemundi in the Gajapati district, the Berhampur Vigilance allegedly conducted raids on his home due to allegations that he had possessions that were out of proportion to his known sources of income.
The properties owned by Patra were discovered during the raids and were worth Rs 7,74,592. Patra was unable to account for the assets worth Rs 3,53,962 as a result.
Patra had been detained by the Vigilance, who had also filed a case. On March 31, 2000, it submitted a chargesheet to the court in the case against Patra in the Vigilance court.
On the basis of the Vigilance's evidence and the testimonies of the witnesses, the court sentenced Patra to imprisonment after hearing the case on Saturday.
