Bhubaneswar: According to a source, Sarmistha Rout, the main suspect in the kidnapping and murder of lensman Manas Swain that has shocked Odisha, hid in her in-laws' house for three days.

Reports said, this was discovered by Sarmistha's mother-in-law Shantilata, who lives in Jajpur's Kolipasi hamlet, and who notified the police about her visit during questioning.

Sarmistha came to their house with another woman named Jhuna Bhoi on March 7 night, Shantilata said the police. She spent three days there before leaving on March 10.

"If proven guilty, Sarmistha should be punished according to the law," she said, according to the report.

Jitesh Kumar Bal, Shantilata's son and a journalist, married Sarmistha in 2013. They have a son together. However, in 2018, the two split up.

The Odisha Crime Branch created two teams to probe the crime after taking over the case on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Chandbali police seized a car belonging to Sarmistha from the garage of Sky Tower condominium, which is located inside the Airfield police jurisdiction. It was said to have been used to kidnap Manas and then dispose of his body in the Nayagarh district.

Her brother, Parameswar, was apprehended in Vijaywada and transported to Chandbali police station. After the murder, he allegedly arranged her departure from the state.
