Bhubaneswar: Even as the death toll from a freight train disaster in Odisha's Jajpur district grew to three, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the victims' families on Monday.

While expressing his sorrow over the event, Vaishnaw also tweeted Rs 1 lakh as compensation for those seriously hurt and Rs 25,000 for others with lesser injuries.

Notably, at 6.44 a.m., eight waggons of a goods train derailed and crashed into the waiting hall at the Korei station. Those who died and were injured were among those waiting for trains in the waiting hall. The railway station building was also damaged as a result of the derailment of the goods train travelling from Dongoaposi to Chhatrapur.

While the incident disrupted rail service, repair efforts are underway.

Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik promised a Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for bereaved families.
