Bhubaneswar: Shrikant Khamari, the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Gopalpur police station in Odisha's Ganjam district, has been transferred for reportedly thrashing a businessman in custody.

According to reports, Smrutirekha Sahu of Ambapuar, Gopalpur police limits, filed a complaint on November 27 at the police station stating that a businessman, Suman Kumar Sahu of Kandhamal district, was not repaying a Rs 12 lakh loan he got from him.

A case was opened at the Gopalpur police station based on the complaint. Suman was then apprehended by police in Raikia and taken to the police station, where he was allegedly assaulted.

Suman suffered serious injuries and was transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital. He was later abandoned at Raikia.

Suman and his wife Subhadra then went to Kandhamal SP Vinit Agarwal, who advised them to submit a written complaint with the police. Following the filing of the charge, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M on Friday evening ordered Khamari's transfer to the Berhampur police district headquarters and sent Marine police station IIC Sarada Prasanna Das to Gopalpur.

Meanwhile, Suman stated that he borrowed Rs 4 lakh from Smrutirekha and reimbursed it through online transactions. During that time, an agreement was also reached, but Suman did not take the papers with him.

He further claimed that Smrutirekha took advantage of his knowledge of the IIC. In this regard, he will also submit a complaint with the State Director General of Police and the Human Rights Commission.
