Another jumbo carcass recovered in kusakhali forest
Angul: A calf was discovered dead on Tuesday at Satkosia Kusakhali forest in Odisha's Angul district, one day after a giant carcass was excavated from Athagarh.
The 5-year-old tusker, who had been ill for the previous 10 days, is said to have passed away as a result of a delay in treatment. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saroj Panda of Satokosia stated that a blood sample had been sent for testing to determine the cause of death.
A herd of elephants had previously surrounded the calf, making it impossible to cure it until Monday, according to sources. But late last night, it passed away.
On Monday, SIT members who were investigating the recovery of three carcasses—two male and one female—by the Special Task Force of Crime Branch and Forest officials earlier in the month also discovered the skeletons of an elephant in the Mandap reserve forest of the Kusapal beat in the Gopapur section.
This was the fifth elephant carcass found in the Athagarh area this year; on June 24, an exhumation took place in Jilinda Range of the Satkosia Wildlife Division, close to Narasinghpur.
On June 15, the Odisha Forest Department was asked for a report on the actions taken in relation to a male elephant who had died from gunshot wounds in the Athagarh forest division of the Cuttack district.
