Bhubaneswar: On Monday, an explosion during the manufacture of firecrackers in a village in Odisha's Khurda district killed at least four people and critically injured many more.

According to sources, the incident occurred in Bhusandapur village, which is under the jurisdiction of Tangi police station, while firecrackers were being made in preparation for the Dola festival.

When the explosives went off, the victims were working in a house making firecrackers. The house where the manufacturing was taking place also caught fire.

Four of them died, while four others were critically burned and rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Khurda for treatment. As their condition worsened, steps were taken to transfer some of them to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, according to sources.

Khurda collector K Sudarshan Chakravarthy stated that it appeared that the firecrackers were made illegally and without permission, and that the entire incident is being thoroughly investigated.

Firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving information and launched an operation to extinguish the flame. A police investigation was also launched after a team of officers visited the site.

On February 28, two people were killed and two others were seriously injured in an explosion at a firecracker unit in Ichhapur village, Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur.
