Bhubaneswar: In the early hours of Sunday, renowned vocalist Nirmala Mishra, who is well known for her Odia and Bengali songs, breathed at her home in southern Kolkata's Chetla neighbourhood. She was 81.

The musician was pronounced dead at the closest nursing facility after suffering a huge heart attack around 12:05 in the morning, a doctor told PTI.

After lending her voice to over 20 Odia films between the 1960s and 1970s, Nirmala reportedly became a household name in Odisha, according to film historian Surya Deo. In 1960, she made her debut in the Odia film industry with the movie "Shri Lokanath," which Balakrushna Dash oversaw musically. He claimed that the song Aaji Akashe Ki Ranga Laagila was what made her famous.

Along with Balakrushna Dash, Nirmala has also worked with a number of well-known and current Odia music producers, including Akshaya Mohanty, Rakhal Mohanty, and Shantanu Mohapatra.

Sanja Sakale, Nida Bhara Rati Madhu Jhara Janha, Mo Mana Binara Tare, Jibana Jamunare Juara Uthere, Mayaghera Madhubane, Ja Jare Bhasija Manapabana Nauka, and Aei Bhara Jahan Rati are some of her other timeless masterpieces (Adina Megha).

She performed for Cuttack's All India Radio as well. Gramaphone has her songs," Deo continued.

The Sangeet Sudhakar Balakrushna Das Award was given to Nirmala in recognition of her lifetime contribution to Odia music.
