Bhubaneswar: A lady accountant who has been missing since October 2022 after allegedly siphoning off teachers' salaries to her personal account while working at the Bhawanipatna block education office has surrendered to the SDJM court in here.

She also filed a bail petition under the name Suchismita Sutar. The court, on the other hand, committed her to judicial custody and ordered police to submit an up-to-date report on the case by February 27, when the next hearing date has been set.

According to sources, the state government set aside approximately Rs 2.27 crore for the payment of salaries to ex-cadere teachers in the Bhawanipatna block between June and September. Sutar allegedly transferred in stages the salaries of 171 primary schoolteachers totaling Rs 39.31 lakh for the month of September to her personal account.

The issue was brought to light when teachers complained about not receiving their salaries. BEO Thakur Charan Sahu filed a FIR on October 7 based on their complaint, and a case was registered against Sutar, who then fled.

Meanwhile, Vigilance agents raided and sealed her home in the Irrigation colony here. According to sources, she was a contractual employee with a monthly salary of Rs 10,000.
