Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government's incentives, along with rising gasoline prices, have resulted in a four-fold rise in electric car sales in the state so far this year compared to the previous year.

This year, 3,741 electric cars were registered in the state, compared to 904 vehicles in 2020. According to data from the Road Transport Ministry's e-service, 1025 e-vehicles were sold in October this year.

High gasoline prices, according to one e-vehicle dealer in the city, are the cause for the increase in demand for these cars. Because the operating costs of battery-powered vehicles are far lower than those of gasoline-powered vehicles, consumers who are in the market for a new vehicle are choosing for e-vehicles, he noted.

Consumers have also been encouraged by the state government's decision to exclude electric vehicles from all motor vehicle taxes and registration costs. The exemption will be valid for all types of battery-operated cars until December 31, 2025, according to a notification issued by the Commerce and Transportation Department on October 30.

The state Cabinet passed an Electric Vehicle Policy on August 27 that calls for the adoption of 20% electric cars in all vehicle registrations by 2025.
