"Sanjay Roy raped and murdered a doctor while in an inebriated condition."The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed the first chargesheet in the R G Kar case.

The CBI filed a chargesheet on Monday, accusing Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, of raping and murdering a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College Hospital on August 9. This incident caused widespread outrage and led to a long strike by junior doctors in West Bengal. Sanjay Roy was arrested soon after the incident, and the case was handed over to the CBI.

58 days after the rape-murder, the CBI filed the first chargesheet in the case – a 45-page document submitted to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah. According to a source in CBI, Sanjay Roy has been charged with rape and murder, and there is no mention of gangrape in the chargesheet. The probe is ongoing, and it was mentioned in the chargesheet that Roy was in an inebriated condition when the crime was committed.

The chargesheet highlighted that investigations so far revealed that Sanjay Roy is the only one accused of direct involvement in the rape and murder. CCTV footage showed Roy entering the seminar room around 4 am on August 9 and leaving after around 30 minutes. The chargesheet also mentioned that there were 16 external and nine internal injuries on the body of the doctor.

It was alleged in the chargesheet that Roy tried to mislead investigators during questioning. Additionally, blood and tissue found from the victim’s nails matched with Roy’s DNA. Roy was interrogated by CBI in custody and underwent a polygraph test inside Presidency central jail, where he is lodged.

In the same case, on September 14, CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondol, the then officer in-charge of Talal police station, in connection with alleged tampering of evidence and trying to “hush up” the incident.
