PM condoles loss of lives due to bus accident in Ganjam district

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the bus accident that killed at least 12 people in Odisha's Ganjam district on Monday, and announced a Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of each deceased.

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the bus accident that killed at least 12 people in Odisha's Ganjam district on Monday, and announced a Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of each deceased.

The money would come from the Prime Minister's national relief fund. The injured will each receive Rs 50,000, according to a tweet from the PMO.

“Pained by the bus accident in Ganjam district, Odisha. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi,” the tweet said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also expressed his sorrow over the Digapahandi road accident. He expressed condolences to the deceased's family members and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"I am heartbroken by the tragic road accident in Digapahandi (Odisha) that took precious lives. My thoughts are with their loved ones during this difficult time. May the Almighty grant them the fortitude to bear this. "I also pray for the injured's quick recovery," Shah said in a tweet.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced ex-gratia payments of Rs 3 lakh to each deceased's next of kin. He also promised free medical care to the injured victims.

Naveen has also ordered Finance Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha and Berhampur MLA Bikram Panda to rush to the scene to assess the situation.

In the early hours of Monday, a private bus carrying a wedding party collided head-on with an OSRTC bus near Digapahandi on the Berhampur-Taptapani road in Ganjam district, killing at least 12 people and injuring several others.
