According to the regional meteorological centre, the temperature in Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar surpassed 40 degrees Celsius before noon on Thursday.

By 11.30 a.m., Jharsuguda had the highest temperature of 41.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhubaneswar at 40.2 degrees Celsius, Chandbali and Keonjhar at 39.6 degrees Celsius each, and Balasore and Sambalpur at 38.6 degrees Celsius each.
Jharsuguda had 34 degrees Celsius and Keonjhar had 33.6 degrees Celsius at 8.30 a.m.
The day also saw 32 girls from a government school hostel become ill as a result of severe heatwave conditions in Odisha's Sundargarh district's Koida area.
On Wednesday, 11 locations experienced extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius. Baripada in Mayurbhanj had the highest temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave warnings have been issued by the MeT office for some areas in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Boudh for the next 24 hours.
Under the influence of a fresh western disturbance, several districts in the state are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40kmph on April 22-23. Rain will also become more widespread starting today. Following that, the temperature will gradually drop by 2 to 4 degrees, according to the forecast.
Due to the current heatwave, the state government has also postponed summer vacation, which will begin in April 21.
