Russian nationals’ death in Odisha: NHRC seeks report from Rayagada SP

Rayagada: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested a four-week action taken report (ATR) from Rayagada's superintendent of police (SP) on the deaths of two Russians, including MP Pavel Antov.

According to sources, the NHRC is dissatisfied with the current criminal inquiry into the deaths of two Russian visitors. It has generated questions about how and under what circumstances the two died and the steps taken to investigate their deaths.

Following the appearance of human rights activist Rabindra Mishra before the commission, the NHRC issued a notice to Rayagada SP Vivekanand Sharma.

Meanwhile, a Crime Branch (CB) team of four officers and forensic experts visited the Raygada cremation yard, where Antov and his fellow tourist Vladimir Bidenov were laid to rest. On December 31, they collected charred remnants for forensic investigation.

They then meticulously searched Rooms 319 and 401 of the hotel where they had stayed and seized the deceased's laptop, mobile phone, passport, and other valuables.

They also received a list of guests who stayed at the hotel between December 1 and December 27, along with their associated addresses and other details for verification. The hotel employees were questioned.

With the help of interpreter and tourist guide Jitendra Singh, the CB team recorded the statement of Russian couple Turov Mikhail and Pane Senko Natalia, who accompanied Pavel and Vladimir. Audio-video recording was used throughout the process.

Pavel died on December 24 after falling from a three-story hotel in Rayagada, while Vladimir died two days later of a suspected heart attack in the same hotel.
