Ruchika Mohanty death case: Odisha Higher Education Dept seeks status report from police

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has requested a status report on the inquiry in the case from the police by this Wednesday, more than three months after a female student of the BJP Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar was discovered dead in her dorm room.
Bishnupada Sethi, the Principal Secretary for Higher Education at the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police, demanded that he produce a status report on the ongoing investigation into the suicide of Ruchika Mohanty by October 12 in order to take the appropriate action.
In the letter, he stated, "you are directed to give a present inquiry status report on the topic of the Ruchika Mohanty suicide case by October 12, 2022."
The letter dated October 11 continued, "This is to be viewed as most important."
It should be mentioned that on July 2, this year, Ruchika Mohanty, a Plus III girl student at BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar, was discovered dead in her dorm room. According to the police who had taken possession of her body and sent it for an autopsy, the girl had died of asphyxiation.
In a statement, the Commissionerate of Police stated that the post-mortem study indicated Ruchika died as a result of asphyxia in the windpipe from hanging by the neck. It stated that a sample of the body's viscera had been submitted to a lab for additional confirmation and information gathering.
Ruchika, who was 19 years old, was enrolled in Plus III First Year (History Honours) at BJB College. She was a resident of Kakhadi Village, which lies under the Choudwar Police Limits in the Cuttack District. She and her roommate were residing in room 201 of the college's Karubaki Women's Hostel.
Police had discovered a suicide note in her pocket after she had passed away. According to the note, she was acting out of character because college seniors had harassed her.
According to sources, three teams led by extra DCPs were constituted by the Commissionerate Police to investigate the case directly under the direction of the DCP in Bhubaneswar. The investigation was expanded to include Ruchika's family members, the relatives' comments, and the letter discovered from the deceased student. The administration had ordered the police to wrap up the inquiry as soon as possible.
The government has instructed the educational institutions to take action in accordance with the SOP given by the department to halt the ragging of the students on campus, stating that the Home department has zero tolerance for crime and criminals.
The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sent a notice to the Commissionerate of Police, taking suo motu cognizance of the case and requesting an update on the case's and the investigation's status.
