Odisha floods: Six die in wall collapse incidents

Bhubaneswar: Six people were injured in wall collapse accidents that occurred as a result of persistent rains in Odisha caused by a strong depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday.

Three further deaths, including two child boys, were reportedly reported from the districts of Koraput, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj.

Priyanshu Rajbhatra, 9, died on Saturday morning in the Koraput district after a bathroom wall fell on him in the Nuasahi neighbourhood in Gandhi Nagar. A similar occurrence occurred in Balasore, where it was reported that a four-year-old boy perished when the school wall fell at Madhupura village, which is part of Baliapatna block.

Sukumar Mahanta, a 40-year-old cook employed by the Rairangpur Sub-divisional Hospital, also passed away on Friday morning as a result of a tree branch hitting him in the town's Durga Mandap Square.

It is important to note that two distinct wall collapse accidents in the districts of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj resulted in the deaths of three people, including two young girls.

A woman died and her husband suffered critical injuries after the mud wall of their home fell in Tikarpada village, which is part of the Mahadeijoda panchayat in Sadar block of Keonjhar. The sisters, 12-year-old Niharika Giri and 4-year-old Suru Giri, were said to be sound sleeping with their parents when the wall of their home collapsed early on Friday due to heavy rain in Mayurbhanj's Bholabeda hamlet under the Bisoi block.

At 5.30 am today, the deep depression that was over northwest Chhattisgarh and the neighbouring northeast Madhya Pradesh and southeast Uttar Pradesh began to diminish and travel west-northwest. Over the course of the next 24 hours, it would deteriorate into a clearly defined low-pressure region while moving west-northwest across northern Madhya Pradesh. According to the MeT office, there is no longer a heavy rain warning for Odisha.
