Odisha floods: Father-son duo rescued from mid-river after 4 days

Bhubaneswar: A man and his son's four-day nightmare came to an end on Wednesday when they were rescued by members of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action (ODRAF) after being stuck on an island in the flooded Mahanadi river in the Cuttack district.

The guy claimed that four days prior, he and his son had travelled to the Amangei Kuda near Kandarpur in the Athagarh region to pasture their goats, but they were unable to leave because of the rising river's water level and strong current.

They became stranded on the little river island as the area was suddenly overwhelmed by floodwaters.

"We had no power. We have a tiny house nearby, and we frequently travel there by boat to let our goat graze. The river is in flood, though, so this time we got stuck. We had to continue going hungry because our food supply ran out two days ago, he continued.

"Now we are content... Our ordeal is over," he declared.

After learning of the event, a five-person ODRAF team with a power boat sped to the location to save the trapped father and boy. Due to the heavy current in the river, we had a lot of trouble getting there. However, we were able to complete the task and safely rescue both, according to a crew member.

Following the father-son pair's rescue by the ODRAF team, agriculture minister Ranendra Pratap Swain paid a site visit and reported that all preparations are being made for a thorough medical examination of the two.

The Minister also provided the two survivors with an oral rehydration medication and assured them that they would get all necessary support.
