Bhubaneswar: Sarat Pattanayak, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), announced on Saturday that the party will support joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the July 18 presidential election, despite calls from Naveen Patnaik, president of the ruling BJD and chief minister, to support Droupadi Murmu, a "daughter of Odisha."

Sarat met with the party's lawmakers after his return from Delhi and briefed them on the High Command's decision. They asked us to vote for Murmu, but since we live in a democratic nation, we will follow the party line and support Sinha.

Santosh Singh Saluja and Ganeswar Behera have been chosen to represent the party in the presidential election, he continued.

13 opposition parties, including the Congress, NCP, TMC, CPI, CPI-M, Samajwadi Party, National Conference, AIMIM, RJD, and AIUDF, have agreed to support Sinha.

Naveen had earlier urged all of the Odisha assembly's members to support Murmu's election to the nation's highest position with unanimity and across party lines.
