Bhubaneswar: The Hirakud Dam in the Sambalpur district of Odisha made the decision on Saturday to discharge the first floodwater of this season into the Mahanadi at 11 am. This decision was made in response to a rise in water level caused by recent rainfall that were brought on by a low-pressure system on July 9.

In the initial stage, five gates will be opened to let the floodwaters go. 64 sluice gates are present, with 24 on the right side of the dam and 40 on the left.

The reservoir's water level was 603.77 feet on Friday, below the ideal level of 630 feet, according to the Water Resources Department. Along with Hirakud, the water level rose in upper and lower Indravati, Balimela, Machkund, and Salandi.

Additionally, the MeT office has issued an orange warning for one or two locations in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Balangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, and Angul for heavy to very heavy rainfall during the course of the next 24 hours.
